Cavities in Dogs

Dental caries occurs when the hard tissues of the dog’s teeth suffer from tooth decay. Oral bacteria are responsible for causing tooth decay.

Key takeaways:

·         A study reveals that 5.3 percent of dogs over one-year-old had one or more dental cavities.

·         Dental cavities affect either the root or the crown.

·         For a root cavity, tooth extraction is the treatment of choice – and restoration of the tooth.

Some of the inherent risk factors that will encourage the development of caries are when the teeth are very tight together, resulting in smooth-surface caries; and when deep pockets between the teeth and gums allow bacteria to gather.
