Dogs Too Smart to Follow Useless Advice

A study by a team from Yale University reveals that dogs will only copy the actions that they deem as essential to getting what they want. They are unlike children who will follow useless advice.

Key takeaways:

  • Children will tend to follow all the actions of a teacher irrespective of whether they are necessary or not.
  • Dogs ignored instructions if there was an easier and more efficient way to complete the task.
  • Dogs have a human-like ability to learn on their own while ignoring instructions from a human demonstrator.

“Although the tendency to copy irrelevant actions may seem silly at first, it becomes less silly when you consider all the important, but seemingly irrelevant, actions that children are successfully able to learn, such as washing their hands and brushing their teeth,” she explained.
