Malocclusion or the misalignment of teeth in dogs can start with the puppy’s baby teeth or later with adult teeth. As a result, the dog’s bite will not fit properly.
- Malocclusion can be caused by problems such as fractures, periodontal disease, mouth injuries and soft tissue defects in the mouth.
- Malocclusion may present as an underbite, even bite, overbite, open bite, anterior and posterior crossbite, and overbite.
- Your veterinarian may recommend a dental specialist to help treat the dog’s misalignment.
Most bite malocclusions do not require treatment. In some cases, extractions may be necessary. It’s a good idea to brush the teeth regularly to prevent abnormal build-up of tartar and plaque.
