Petsmile Professional Pet Toothpaste is the toothpaste we reach for first at Petdentist: VOHC Accepted for plaque control in dogs, made around Petsmile's Calprox® formulation, and flavoured with London Broil, a beefy flavour so brushing stops being a wrestling match.

Start by letting your pet lick a little from your finger. Move to a soft pet toothbrush when they are ready. A pea-sized amount once or twice a day is all it takes.

Why it works
  • VOHC Accepted for plaque control in dogs. An independent credential from the Veterinary Oral Health Council, not a marketing adjective.

  • Brush or apply. The manufacturer permits direct application to the teeth for pets that are new to brushing; brushing adds the cleaning action once they accept it.
  • No rinsing, no waiting. Safe to swallow in normal use; your pet can eat and drink straight afterwards.

How to use
  1. Let your pet sniff and lick a small amount of paste from your finger so the taste comes first.
  2. Over a few days, rub a little paste onto the outer surfaces of the front teeth with your fingertip while gently lifting the lip.
  3. Put a pea-sized amount on a soft pet toothbrush and let your pet lick it from the bristles.
  4. Brush the outer surfaces of the teeth at a 45-degree angle to the gum line, a few teeth at a time. Do not force the mouth open.
  5. Aim for once a day, or at least several times a week. Consistency matters more than a perfect session.

Use the manufacturer's directions on the tube if they differ from the above.

Formulations can change. Always check the ingredient declaration printed on the tube you receive, particularly if your pet has a known sensitivity.

Safety and when to see your vet
  • For animal use only. Use as directed by the manufacturer. Do not use human toothpaste on pets.

FAQs

Is Petsmile VOHC Accepted?

Yes. Petsmile Professional Pet Toothpaste appears on the Veterinary Oral Health Council's list of accepted products for plaque control in dogs (seal awarded 2011). The credential applies to dogs; the manufacturer markets the toothpaste for dogs and cats.

Do I have to brush, or can I just apply it?

The manufacturer allows direct application to the teeth with a finger. We recommend introducing a brush once your pet accepts the taste, because brushing adds the mechanical cleaning that toothpaste alone cannot.

How much do I use and how often?

A pea-sized amount once or twice a day on the outer surfaces of the teeth. Follow the directions printed on the tube.

Can my pet eat and drink afterwards?

Yes. The manufacturer's directions do not require a waiting period before food or water.

How long does a tube last?

It depends on the size of your pet and how often you brush. Most single-dog households find a 4.2 oz tube lasts one to two months of daily use.

What if my pet refuses the flavour?

Email info@petdentist.co.uk within 30 days of delivery with your order number and we will refund the toothpaste, even if the tube is opened. One tube per household; see our refund policy.

My chihuahua had to have a lot of teeth taken out. I wanted the remaining teeth to be well looked after. This toothpaste is brilliant, her teeth are clean and her breath is good. I also use mouthwash and plaque off and make sure none of her treats have sugar. I got her when she was 6 and think the damage to her teeth had already been done

Bought this toothpaste for my 10 year old Westie as the vet said he had plaque build up and this was making his gums red. We thought we’d start applying the paste by finger tip, which although at first he wasn’t keen after a week of applications he doesn’t mind. He quite likes the beef flavour too. I have noticed that his gums are less red and the plaque is dissolving slowly which is good. In a few more weeks I will try brushing his teeth as well.
